And while all the earliest Christians were Jews, their beliefs differed so radically from most Jews of their day that they were soon ejected from the Jewish synagogues and regarded with hostility as followers of a different religion.

Old versus new covenant
Explores how the new covenant in Christ should guide the ways we apply all of Scripture to our own day. We all have experiences that we quickly forget, but some experiences impact us so much that they stick with us our whole lives. Perhaps, for you, it's when you first came to faith in Christ, your wedding day or the loss of a loved one. Whatever the case, when we go through these kinds of experiences, they change how we look at everything, forever. And the same is true for followers of Christ as we apply the Scriptures to our modern world. Although the Bible tells us about many things that God has done, the arrival of the new covenant in Christ is a pivotal event that changes the way we understand everything, including the application of Scripture to our lives today. In our previous lesson, we learned how we must acknowledge epochal developments in the Old Testament as we apply the Bible to our lives.

New Testament , second, later, and smaller of the two major divisions of the Christian Bible , and the portion that is canonical authoritative only to Christianity. A brief treatment of the New Testament follows. For full treatment, see biblical literature: Conditions aiding the formation of the canon. The Catholic Encyclopedia contains a very good definition of a covenant - "A solemn promise, fortified by an oath, concerning future action. The Old Covenant is generally thought of as the Covenant made between God and Moses but it can be better thought about as a series of covenants between Yahweh and the Hebrew people. In the first covenant God swears to provide Abram with an heir and tells him that the sign of the covenant shall be the stars in the sky which represent how numerous his descendents shall be. Yahweh made a covenent to spare the Hebrew people from the worst of the plagues. In making this covenant, ia family sacrificed an unblemished lamb, sprinkled the blood, and roasted the lamb and ate it. The left overs were burned as an offering.

Generally, Christians believe that the promised New Covenant was instituted at the Last Supper as part of the Eucharist , which in the Gospel of John includes the New Commandment. Based on the Bible teaching that, "For where a testament is, there must also of necessity be the death of the testator. For a testament is of force after men are dead: otherwise it is of no strength at all while the testator liveth", Protestants tend to believe that the New Covenant only came into force with the death of Jesus Christ. There are several Christian eschatologies that further define the New Covenant. For example, an inaugurated eschatology defines and describes the New Covenant as an ongoing relationship between Christian believers and God that will be in full fruition after the Second Coming of Christ ; that is, it will not only be in full fruition in believing hearts, but in the future external world as well. The connection between the Blood of Christ and the New Covenant is seen in most modern English translations of the New Testament such as in the statement: "this cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood".
