A theory of international relations is a set of ideas that explains how the international system works. Unlike an ideology, a theory of international relations is at least in principle backed up with concrete evidence. The two major theories of international relations are realism and liberalism. Most theories of international relations are based on the idea that states always act in accordance with their national interest, or the interests of that particular state. State interests often include self-preservation, military security, economic prosperity, and influence over other states.

Special Book Review: Theories of International Politics and Zombies

What would happen to international politics if the dead rose from the grave and started to eat the living? Daniel Drezner's groundbreaking book answers the question that other international relations scholars have been too scared to ask. Addressing timely issues with analytical bite, Drezner looks at how well-known theories from international relations might be applied to a war with zombies. Exploring the plots of popular zombie films, songs, and books, Theories of International Politics and Zombies predicts realistic scenarios for the political stage in the face of a zombie threat and considers how valid—or how rotten—such scenarios might be. This newly revived edition includes substantial updates throughout as well as a new epilogue assessing the role of the zombie analogy in the public sphere. He imagines a world overrun with zombies and considers the likely responses of national governments, the U.

And so the zany "and zombies" publishing meme still refuses to die. The latest example is from Daniel W Drezner, a politics professor at Tufts. It follows the literary mash-up Pride andPrejudice and Zombies as well as the more serious Zombie Economics, an attempted purge of defunct economic doctrines written by Drezner's online sparring partner John Quiggin. Drezner's own effort lands somewhere between the two. It is remorselessly jokey, "chewing over" implications and "fleshing out" models. An introductory section traces the rising fortunes of undead-themed entertainments, which rather brazens out the opportunism of the project. On the other hand, the prospect of a zombie apocalypse turns out to be quite a good test by which to differentiate the major schools in international policy.

In light of this, Sara Yasin reviews an important book that draws on years of zombie research to bring the Prime Minister the guidance he desperately needs to protect all our brains.
