Classification Principles: Metamorphic Facies versus Metamorphic Grade

Petrogenesis of Metamorphic Rocks pp Cite as. It was a milestone in the understanding of metamorphic petrology when Eskola published his concept of metamorphic fades with the intention of replacing the earlier Becke and Grubenmann concepts of metamorphic depth zones. Nevertheless this concept of depth zones was elaborated and slightly modified by Grubenmann and Niggli and remained in use for decades.

In the depth zone classification the physical factors of temperature, hydrostatic pressure, and directed pressure stress were believed to be strictly correlated in the manner demonstrated in Table Unable to display preview. Igneous and Metamorphic Petrology by Turner F J

At Otago he became interested in metamorphism and studied the unexplored metamorphic rocks of South Island on which he earned his PhD in from the University of New Zealand. His application and expansion of Pentti Eskola 's concept of metamorphic facies led to his publication of Mineralogical and Structural Evolution of Metamorphic Rocks , the book that established his position in the field of petrology and was a great influence on a generation of geologists. In he accepted a position at the University of California in Berkeley. At Berkeley he gained insight into experimental studies of petrology and geochemistry. He later collaborated with John Verhoogen on the classic work Igneous and Metamorphic Petrology published in He authored eighty technical papers and six textbooks on metamorphic, igneous, and structural petrology. He retired from Berkeley in

Scientific Research An Academic Publisher. Turner, F. Twelve representative rock samples were selected for thin section petrography and bulk rock geochemical analysis. The results reveal that the dominant intrusive rocks in Okom-Ita area are pegmatites, quartz veins and dolerites emplaced within gneisses, schists and phyllites host rocks.

Hornblendic rocks hornblende schists, amphibolites, and hornblendites occur in intimate association with metasedimentary schists and granitic rocks in the Kanigiri Gogulapalle area of Andhra Pradesh, India. Field studies indicate that a majority of these rocks are possibly concordant intrusives, some of them being metasedimentary. Petrographic study shows that most of them consist of hornblende and plagioclase as essential minerals, whereas some are characterized by tremolite and plagioclase with accessory calcic minerals. Absence of detrital minerals and pyroxenic cores in the amphiboles characterize all the rocks. Geochemical studies reveal that the rocks are most probably magmatic intrusives judged from the low Niggli k and high TiO 2 values and the presence of high Sr, Cr, V, and Ni amongst the trace elements.
