Introduction Divided into seven chapters, D. Commenting that he does not approach the discussion from a particular eschatological system, Sandy pursues both a philological and a historical methodology to understanding prophetic fulfillment.

Sandy focuses exclusively on the hermeneutics of prophecy and not its potential realization in current events, hoping instead to maintain a reflective, eschatologically neutral stance. Rather, the book neglects to address all the implications of prophetic language, such as its effect on typology and the potential implications of pseudosorites. Because these prophetic words were oral in nature, the original audience would have recognized rhetorically dramatic imagery as symbolic language that purposely created an emotive experience.

Since all language intends to communicate human experience, a 1 D. Human language is thus only a partially accurate method for communicating about God since it is limited by human foresight and imagination. Therefore, the message of prophecy does not reside in the minutiae of its details. In particular, because prophetic language is also poetic language, Sandy explains that these prophecies were more performance than propositional.

This causes a problem for determining whether certain parts of prophecy were literal or figurative. When considering whether prophecies were partially or totally fulfilled, Sandy notes that oftentimes these prophecies were only partially realized while the original audience and later generations expected a future consummation of the oracles. This led to the use of exaggerated opposites in prophecy, which expressed paradoxical truths in hyperbolic fashion in order to stress the mystery of life.

Citing literary critics, linguists, 2 Ibid. However, standard lexical analyses will not help decipher the necessary meaning of these metaphors. This is because individual words are merely the cultural and contextual symbols used to convey particular referents, which oftentimes express ideas and concepts not fully contained in the semantic domains of dictionary definitions. In many ways, the prophets capitalized on this ambiguous language in order to enrich the meaning of their prophecies.

Figures of speech especially add intensity and emphasis to the message, making the prophecy memorable, captivating, imaginative, and emotive. Nevertheless, a problem develops when readers interpret the ambiguous nature of abstract concepts as having literal referents. Sandy stresses the need for readers to recognize prophecy as poetic, metaphorical language.

The wording itself was stereotypical, meaning that prophetic oracles paralleled the tactics of other ancient Near Eastern vassal treaties in its attempt to eliminate any possibility of disloyalty or disobedience. They used hyperbolic statements to overwhelm their hearers with graphic imagery. As opposed to the other two subsets of prophecy oracles of salvation and announcements of judgment , which utilize poetic language and figures of speech, apocalyptic material is visionary and fantastic.

Thus, they function emotively to bring comfort, hope, and assurance to the persecuted. The use of vivid imagery intends to be allusive in order to allow a fluidity of meaning and application. The author also suggests that some images may simply be for dramatic effect and may not have a particular referent at all.

Consequently, they intended to persuade their audience of an impending doom if they did not retain loyalty to God. The problem with literalism is that it attempts to discover superficial predictions about the future, whereas the biblical pattern does not allow readers to decipher explicit fulfillments in advance. The original audience was usually uncertain about how prophecy would develop because the message and imagery were often vague.

Similarly, many fulfilled prophecies occurred in an unexpected manner that was different from what the original audience initially thought. Next is its metaphorical nature, which allows humans to express divine mysteries.

These features in prophetic language produced a sense of urgency and immediacy, describing the necessity of loyalty to God while depicting overwhelming end-of-the- world curses and blessings. Christians should not expect an exact, literal fulfillment of biblical prophecies because the prophetic message oftentimes depicts hyperbolic extremes that are beyond comprehension.

It is a great reminder that readers cannot approach prophecy or apocalyptic imagery with a simplistic literalism that pervades popular hermeneutics. Sandy is correct to argue that the elusive nature of poetry precludes identifying the exact outcomes of futuristic predictions.

The graphic imagery and over exaggerations function to call Israel to repentance, not necessarily to identify contemporary situations twenty centuries into the future. Unfortunately, too many dispensationalists wait for the metaphorical nature of prophecy to evidence itself in clear figures of speech before accepting 8 Ibid. Grand Rapids, MI: Zondervan, , After all, prophetic language is also poetic language, which is metaphorical by nature and, therefore, inherently antithetical to literalism.

The prophet is expressing his feelings just as much as he is expressing his desire for obedience. It would be a mistake to focus solely on the predictive qualities of prophecy without relating it to its affective, hortatory function. Ryrie, Dispensationalism, 2nd ed. It is possible for the divine author to intend additional applications apart from the human author, suggesting that the human authors also displayed subconscious intentions unbeknownst to them cf.

To counter this potential conflict, Sandy would need to stress the impossibility of verifying any 13 Sandy, Essays on the Use of the Old Testament in the New, ed. Hirsch Jr. Jonah By presenting predictive prophecy in this fashion, the contradiction emphasizes the preliminary statement by highlighting the seriousness of the convictions that produced the original prophecy.

Klein, Craig L. Blomberg and Robert L. Hubbard Jr. His work is a masterful example of allowing the complexities of prophecy to force a rethinking of prophetic presuppositions and literalistic readings.

Sandy successfully demonstrates that the emotional and poetic nature of prophetic language is symbolic, rhetorical, metaphorical, and hyperbolic.

The book provides a helpful explanation for why certain prophecies are enigmatically or only partially fulfilled, as well as why some prophecies appear to defy realization cf. Beale, Chisholm, Robert. Fee, Gordon D. Grand Rapids, MI: Zondervan, Hirsch, E.

The language and imagery of biblical prophecy has been a source of puzzlement and dispute for many Christians. Yet the prophets and seers took pains to speak God's word clearly and effectively. Brent Sandy carefully considers the language and Brent Sandy carefully considers the language and imagery of prophecy and apocalyptic, how it is used, how it is fulfilled within Scripture, and how we should read it today. World Peace and “Holy War”—Two Sides of the Same Theological Concept

What are we to make of Isaiah's image of Mount Zion as the highest of the mountains, or Zechariah's picture of the Mount of Olives split in two, or Daniel's "beast rising out of the sea" or Revelation's "great red dragon, with seven heads and ten horns"? How can Peter claim that on the day of Pentecost the prophecy of Joel was being fulfilled, with signs in heaven and wonders on earth, the sun turned to darkness and the moon to blood? The language and imagery of biblical prophecy has been the source of puzzlement for many Christians and a point of dispute for some. How ironic that is! For the prophets and seers were the wordsmiths of their time.

Swords to ploughshares or plowshares is a concept in which military weapons or technologies are converted for peaceful civilian applications. The phrase originates from the Book of Isaiah :. Many peoples shall come and say, "Come, let us go up to the mountain of the L ORD , to the house of the God of Jacob; that he may teach us his ways and that we may walk in his paths.

The Bible King James Version states, "And he shall judge among the nations, and shall rebuke many people: and they shall beat their swords into ploughshares, and their spears into pruninghooks: nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war anymore" Isaiah 2. And he will certainly render judgment among the nations and set matters straight respecting many peoples. And they will have to beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning shears. Nation will not lift up sword against nation, neither will they learn war anymore.
