The interdisciplinary seminar on the Jewish Roots of Eastern Christian Mysticism is designed as the internet version of an ongoing research seminar of graduate students at the department of theology of Marquette University Milwaukee, USA. The seminar started in March as an attempt to investigate Jewish mystical traditions in the eastern Christian theological and liturgical texts. It was thought that the seminar would help initiate and inspire the discussion about the Jewish influences on eastern Christian mysticism among a broader audience. Eitan P. In medieval Jewish mysticism, interpretive legitimacy was often a function of tradition. If a particular idea or practice was transmitted through reliable sources, if the teacher in question was deemed authoritative, then the content of the tradition was considered to be credible and therefore true. In this article I examine the living dynamic of reception and transmission in the writing of a fourteenth-century kabbalist—a figure who may be considered paradigmatic of a larger phenomenon in medieval Jewish religion. Through analysis of rhetorical tropes and types, I seek to demonstrate the ways in which meaning and authoritative status were construed in kabbalistic culture, how the Jewish mystic aims to determine exegetical and pedagogical legitimacy. This larger conceptual rubric is manifested through a variety of subissues, including orality and textuality in the reception and perception of tradition, the impulse to reconcile seemingly conflicting teachings, and the pursuit of authorial intent by the kabbalist in explaining the received words of a master.

An annotated anthology of Jewish mystical works, concepts, and experiences, A Kabbalah and Jewish Mysticism Reader explores issues relating to what has compelled Jews to seek a more intimate relationship with God. It does this by providing readings from the most important mystical texts, accompanied by Daniel M. It is carefully designed to make the basic concepts and teachings of Jewish mysticism accessible to a wide audience and to ground these ideas within the broader Jewish tradition. The Scandal of Kabbalah is the first book about the origins of a culture war that began in early modern Europe and continues to this day: the debate between kabbalists and their critics on the nature of Judaism and the meaning of religious tradition. From its medieval beginnings as an esoteric form of Jewish mysticism, Kabbalah spread throughout the early modern world and became a central feature of Jewish life. Scholars have long studied the revolutionary impact of Kabbalah, but, as Yaacob Dweck argues, they have misunderstood the character and timing of opposition to it. Drawing on a range of previously unexamined sources, this book tells the story of the first criticism of Kabbalah, Ari Nohem , written by Leon Modena in Venice in In this scathing indictment of Venetian Jews who had embraced Kabbalah as an authentic form of ancient esotericism, Modena proved the recent origins of Kabbalah and sought to convince his readers to return to the spiritualized rationalism of Maimonides. The Scandal of Kabbalah examines the hallmarks of Jewish modernity displayed by Modena's attack--a critical analysis of sacred texts, skepticism about religious truths, and self-consciousness about the past--and shows how these qualities and the later history of his polemic challenge conventional understandings of the relationship between Kabbalah and modernity. Dweck argues that Kabbalah was the subject of critical inquiry in the very period it came to dominate Jewish life rather than centuries later as most scholars have thought.
The point here is not only that these dualities exist in the life of the mystic. With that we are familiar enough in other mystical traditions. The.
