Asynchronous Counter

The major classification of counters is synchronous and asynchronous counters. The significant difference between synchronous and asynchronous counter is made by the way the clock signal is provided to these digital devices. Synchronous counter is the one in which all the flip flops are clocked simultaneously with the similar clock input. On the contrary, an asynchronous counter is a device in which all the flip flops that constitute that counter are clocked with different input signals at different instants of time. A counter is known as a sequential logic circuit that consists of flip-flops as its fundamental element. It is a cascade combination of multiple flip-flops to which the clock pulse is provided. Counters are generally used for the purpose of counting in digital circuits and the total number of counts represent the number of clock pulses arrived.

Counters are of two types depending upon clock pulse applied. These counters are: Asynchronous counter, and Synchronous counter. In Asynchronous Counter is also known as Ripple Counter , different flip flops are triggered with different clock, not simultaneously. While in Synchronous Counter , all flip flops are triggered with same clock simultaneously and Synchronous Counter is faster than asynchronous counter in operation. Attention reader! A counter is a device which can count any particular event on the basis of how many times the particular event s is occurred. In a digital logic system or computers, this counter can count and store the number of time any particular event or process have occurred, depending on a clock signal. Most common type of counter is sequential digital logic circuit with a single clock input and multiple outputs. The outputs represent binary or binary coded decimal numbers. Each clock pulse either increase the number or decrease the number.

Counters remember the digital combinations of data. Counters are used everywhere and every time in our day to day life. Example is the digital clock alarm that wakes you up in the early morning. There are two types of counters. Asynchronous counters are those whose output is free from the clock signal. Because the flip flops in asynchronous counters are supplied with different clock signals, there may be delay in producing output. A counter is a sequential logic circuit that goes through a prescribed sequence of states upon the application of input pulses. The prescribed sequence can be a binary sequence or any other sequence. A counter that goes through 2 N N is the number of flip-flops in the series states is called a binary counter. The modulus of a counter is the number of different states it is allowed to have. Counters are very widely used in almost all computers and other digital electronic systems.
