The most recent addition to the Fundamentals of Philosophy Series, Political Philosophy is a concise yet thorough and highly engaging introduction to the essential problems of the discipline. Organized topically and presented in a straightforward manner by an eminent political philosopher, A. John Simmons, it investigates the nature and basis of political authority and the structure and organization of political life.

Each chapter focuses on a central problem, considers how it could be addressed, and outlines the various philosophical positions surrounding it. Covering both historical and contemporary work, this unique text offers a survey of major concepts and debates while also reflecting the author's views and contributions. Accessible to novices yet also useful for advanced students, Political Philosophy presents a unified and accessible portrait of the issues that have been puzzling political philosophers for years.

This is a very academic read, which is to be expected, but there are times when it almost presupposes a background in political philosophy. As a PHIL major I have been exposed to dense work, so that didn't surprise me, but there were times when I could barely comprehend the big picture. I suppose the accounts offered within the book are thorough, but they may have been written with other academics in mind.

This is in contrast to a book from this series on free will by Robert Kane highly recommend which can also be difficult at times, but is significantly easier to understand than the book by Simmons.

Today borders face new pressures from heightened human mobility, economic interdependence legal and illicit , and perceived challenges from a host of nonstate threats. Research has only begun to reveal what some of these changes mean for the governance of interstate borders. The problems surrounding international borders today go well beyond traditional delineation and delimitation. These problems call for active forms of governance to manage human mobility and interdependence. However, human rights norms sometimes rest uneasily alongside unilateral border governance. A research agenda that documents and explains new border developments, and critically assesses emerging rules and practices in light of international human rights, is an essential direction for international studies research.

Recibido: Aceptado: Many conservatives endorse a defence of closed borders grounded in basic liberal rights such as the basic right of association. Some conservatives also endorse libertarian principles of legitimacy. It is not clear though that this sort of defence of closed borders is somehow coherent with these libertarian ideals.

The article then explores the prospects of a hybrid theory that would combine elements of the two and concludes by examining the ways in which the various conceptions of state legitimacy under consideration might be applied or adapted to the case of supranational political institutions. Keywords: Legitimacy , authority , consent , justice , power , political obligation , the state. A set of political institutions is legitimate in the descriptive or sociological sense if those subject to its directives widely believe it to enjoy the moral right to rule. By contrast, a set of institutions is legitimate in the prescriptive or normative sense if it in fact enjoys the moral right to rule over those it claims the authority to govern.
