Guided by the coupled human and natural systems framework, an international team of natural and social scientists has conducted intensive and integrated studies in Wolong Nature Reserve in China since Wolong lies within a global biodiversity hotspot and is home to the world-famous endangered panda.

As findings from Wolong have been applicable to many other coupled systems, Wolong constitutes a valuable model coupled system.
The book connects different components of the model coupled system through systems modeling and integration of various types of socioeconomic and biophysical data. It presents novel ideas and methods for understanding the patterns and processes of how coupled systems evolve.
The book contributes to many existing and new theories such as those on complexity, social norms, collective action, forest transition, and telecoupling.
It also outlines key topics for future research. This book thus holds promise for improving the understanding of coupled systems, and guiding sustainability research and natural resource management for Wolong and beyond.
