The livestock sector globally is highly dynamic. In developing countries, it is evolving in response to rapidly increasing demand for livestock products. In developed countries, demand for livestock products is stagnating, while many production systems are increasing their efficiency and environmental sustainability. Historical changes in the demand for livestock products have been largely driven by human population growth, income growth and urbanization and the production response in different livestock systems has been associated with science and technology as well as increases in animal numbers. In the future, production will increasingly be affected by competition for natural resources, particularly land and water, competition between food and feed and by the need to operate in a carbon-constrained economy. Developments in breeding, nutrition and animal health will continue to contribute to increasing potential production and further efficiency and genetic gains. Livestock production is likely to be increasingly affected by carbon constraints and environmental and animal welfare legislation.
Animal husbandry is the branch of agriculture concerned with animals that are raised for meat , fibre , milk , eggs , or other products. It includes day-to-day care, selective breeding and the raising of livestock. Husbandry has a long history, starting with the Neolithic revolution when animals were first domesticated , from around 13, BC onwards, antedating farming of the first crops. By the time of early civilisations such as ancient Egypt , cattle , sheep , goats and pigs were being raised on farms. Major changes took place in the Columbian exchange when Old World livestock were brought to the New World, and then in the British Agricultural Revolution of the 18th century, when livestock breeds like the Dishley Longhorn cattle and Lincoln Longwool sheep were rapidly improved by agriculturalists such as Robert Bakewell to yield more meat, milk, and wool. A wide range of other species such as horse , water buffalo , llama , rabbit and guinea pig are used as livestock in some parts of the world. Insect farming , as well as aquaculture of fish , molluscs , and crustaceans , is widespread.
This publication was produced in the framework of an IAEA technical cooperation project and presents the latest trends in livestock production and cattle breeding management in Asia. It includes information on traits for dairy and beef cattle, their selection criteria, and breeding objectives, proposed systems for operating a cattle breeding and genetic improvement programme in Asia, and an overview of current and future technologies for improvement of cattle breeding. The publication is intended for livestock specialists involved in all levels of cattle breeding in Asia, but also for representatives from agricultural ministries, universities, departments of livestock and veterinary services as well as public and private veterinarians and consultants. Manual [pdf, kb]. This publication presents various models, describing the quantitative excretion of purine derivatives in urine, developed for various breeds of cattle and for sheep, goat, camel and buffalo and their use for estimation of microbial protein supply in ruminant livestock. This approach of using spot urine samples dispenses with quantitative recovery of urine, enabling its use by field and extension workers for evaluation of the nutritional status of farm animals. Future areas of research are also highlighted in the book.

Reproduction is an important consideration in the economics of cattle production. In the absence of regular breeding and calving at the appropriate time, cattle rearing will not be profitable. A healthy calf each year is the usual goal. This is possible only by increasing the reproductive efficiency of the animals.
